The Tour de France, which starts today at Mont-St-Michel, will be visiting a number of places in the first few days that should be familiar to many Phoenix cyclists.
Mont-St-Michel has been visited on numerous occasions if we include the Bikeathon Club years (from 1996) although, on our last visit in 2012, we weren’t allowed to cycle the last kilometre to the ‘Mount’. We were supposed to use a shuttle bus so we gave it a miss. Presumably the TdeF cyclists will give it a miss too! (The shuttle bus, of course).
Day 2 (Sunday) finishes in Cherbourg where two channel hoppers have been based in recent years. Also, there was a trip from St Malo to Cherbourg last year.
Day 3 (Monday) starts in Granville where we stayed on the St Malo to Cherbourg trip and finishes in Angers which is well known to some of us. We last visited Angers on the Loire Valley trip in 2013. Also, on that trip we had an overnight stop at Vitre which the TdeF will be passing through on Day 3. Another town Le Tour goes through on this day is Fougeres; how many times have we had an overnight stop there over the years!
The following day starts in Saumur which is another place where we’ve had overnight stops.
The final day of Le Tour starts at Chantilly where some of us stayed last year when returning from Paris and, of course, finishes in Paris.
It’s always good to watch the Tour de France on TV and see if there are any places or roads which look familiar; there’ll certainly be some this year. It’s on both Eurosport and ITV4 each day with highlights on ITV4 in the evenings.
