Phoenix CTC held another Channel Hopper over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, this time to Cherbourg, which was a great success.
Seven of us sailed to Cherbourg on Friday 28 April arriving there in late afternoon and settled into the Hotel Le Louvre, which has been recently refurbished and proved to be an excellent base for the weekend.
On Saturday we cycled inland to the west coast and returned along the spectacular coastline around Cap Hague stopping at the pretty village of Goury for lunch. Here we had great views to Alderney, less than 8 miles across the “Raz Blanchard”, which is one of the strongest currents in the world making shipping extremely dangerous.
On Sunday we cycled south and east through stunning countryside to the charming seaport of St Vaast la Houge from where we hugged the coastline back to Cherbourg. A pleasant lunch was had in the harbour town of Barfleur. We were certainly blessed with 2 days of sunshine making cycling in this area a pure joy.
Monday was a very dull damp morning so most spent the morning exploring the town of Cherbourg. A couple of hardened cyclists went further afield to explore some longer cycle routes before regrouping in the afternoon to catch our ferry back to Poole.
Another super trip by Phoenix CTC.
