Safety is paramount when planning our routes.
We avoid busy roads and, where practical, steep hills. Quiet country roads and well surfaced cycle paths are our preference. The target daily distance is 100 kms (62 miles) as we’ve found over the years that this suits most reasonably fit cyclists on touring bikes.
Routes are plotted on RideWithGPS (RWGPS) and a virtual reconnoitre is conducted using Streetview. This often leads to modifications before a route is finalised. A link to the plotted route is then sent to participants so that they have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with it before going on a trip. Also, for those with Garmin GPS bike computers or mobile phones with the RWGPS app, they can download the plotted routes onto those devices.
Cue sheets, a type of route instruction, are available with the plotted route on RWGPS.
