A Windy French Cycle Tour

Cyclists at Granville

Cyclists on the seafront at Granville

Eight Phoenix-CTC cyclists have just completed a week-long cycle tour starting in St Malo and finishing in Cherbourg. About 480 kms (300 miles) were cycled mostly in very windy conditions.

Overnight stops were at Fougeres, Granville, Saint Lo, Bayeux and Quettehou.

The wind was gusty so side winds were the main problem; everyone had to hold onto their handlebars very tightly to try to steer a straight line and avoid being blown over.

At the end of the ride there was some concern that the return ferry, a catamaran, may be cancelled due to the high winds but it wasn’t. This made for a rather undulating crossing but that wasn’t a problem for the cyclists; they’d been undulating on their bicycles for the past six days!

There will be a write-up of the tour with pictures in the Summer issue of Phoenix Cyclist due out later this month.

Thanks for the update Clive. So sorry that Eli and I had to back out on the opening day of the trip, having spent another night in A&E. She was operated on yesterday (Wednesday) and hopefully will be discharged very soon.
